Define functionality before plugins
Write down necessary functions: forms, backups, SEO, payments, authentication, speed and multilingual content. Do not install two plugins that compete to control the same core function.
Evaluation rubric
- Maintainer update and compatibility policy
- Plugin permissions and remote dependencies
- Database writes and background tasks
- Recovery path when a plugin is disabled
- Accessibility and front-end output quality
Practical process
1. Start from a clean theme with minimal plugins. 2. Add one plugin at a time and record why it exists. 3. Run performance tests using representative content. 4. Confirm the rollback process before production updates. 5. Keep verified backups and remove unused themes/plugins.
A plugin directory listing is not a substitute for a security review. Prefer official vendor documentation for compatibility and support policy.
Examples are starting points, not production security audits. Confirm dependencies, versions and pricing using linked vendor documentation.
